The Department of Communication offers a wide variety of media which serve many different purposes for the University, our community, Communication Arts majors, all of the student body, alumni, faculty, and staff. The student newspaper is housed in the Morgan University Center and is published weekly during
each semester when school is in session. Students serve as editors and reporters for the newspaper.
The Department of Communication is affiliated with
the Broadcast Education Association which offers
students more than $16,000 worth of competitive scholarships. Contact Kathy Lee or Yvonne Prather.
Provides interested students with an outside of class opportunity to plan, design, and publish Web sites for nonprofit groups and clients in middle Tennessee. Properly trained students are welcomed as designers.
 
Licensed by the FCC as a noncommercial FM radio station, WAPX - FM, Magic 91.9, is the broadcast voice and service of Austin Peay State University. Properly trained students are welcomed as announcers. C
Operates 24 hours a day with fine arts, NASA, and local programming, including the broadcast of APSU sporting and other special events, on channel 99 for Montgomery County, Charter Communication cable TV subscribers.
Allows students with the appropriate training and skills to work on the publishing of digital audio and video productions on DVDs for nonprofit groups and clients in middle Tennessee. Contact Kathy Lee to participate.
Equipped with telephones as well as polling and statistical analysis software, the Communication Research Center provides students with first-hand
experience for advertising, marketing, political and other survey work.

Projects: Build Web sites for middle Tennessee nonprofit agencies and other clients.
Purpose: To assist students in developing portfolios for positions in Internet technology.

APSU BEA (Broadcast Education Association)
 
     
     
 
Austin Peay State University Department of Communication is affiliated with the Broadcast Education Association (educational arm of the National Association of Broadcasters). This affiliation makes APSU students majoring in Communication Arts (particularly in the Broadcast Media and Media Technology specializations) eligible to attend the NAB and BEA Conventions in Las Vegas, NV and view new audio and video technologies each year in April as well as qualify to apply for over $20,000.00 worth of scholarships.

This is a relatively new medium under the direction of Dr. Mike Gotcher, and a Web site will appear soon. Interested students should have a background in video production and be familiar with the Windows XP operating system.

Requirements: Students must have completed COMM 2100 and 3760 to participate.
Projects: Write and enter public service announcements, assist with programming schedules, and monitor live cablecasts of APSU sporting and other special events.
Purpose: To provide the Montgomery County community with exposure to APSU, fine arts, and other special programming. To assist students interested in broadcast media with the master control operations of a teleivsion station.

This is a highly successful APSU medium under the direction of Professor Kathy Lee, a PBS producer of documentaries. Here students apply their audio and video digital production skills for the successful completion of DVDs for corporate and nonprofit clients.

The Communication Research Center offers a full-featured, up-to-date set of multiple work stations capable of telephone polling, data collection, and data analysis. The Center is available for class or departmental projects in addition to providing its services to paying clients.

Projects: Students conduct original polls and surveys at telephone and computer work stations.
Purpose: To provide the department, it's classes, and students with an opportunity to conduct surveys and polls on a variety of communication topics.

WAPX-FM is the voice and broadcast service of Austin Peay State University playing a variety of music and offering news and sports to its many listeners. The station and its General Manager, Dr. David von Palko, have received many awards for public affairs and news programming in addition to public service.

Sports Broadcastiang
 
     
     
 
Sports Broadcasting is among the latest technological developments at APSU. With Jumbotron screens in the Dunn Center for men's and women's basketball games, and now also outside in the Governor's Stadium for men's football, sports broadcasting is in a growth mode at the Peay. Within the Dunn Center there is a sports video and audio production studio, master control, and a 9-camera remote broadcast set-up for home games. Communication Arts majors get hands-on experience beginning with their Freshmen year. Basketball gams and other special events are streamed over the Internet and broadcast on CableChannel 99.

Projects: Students produce sports programming and serve in technical capacities
Purpose: To provide Peay intercollegiate athletics fans, APSU students, faculty, and staff with the opportunity to watch Governor's sporring compeitions while providing Communication Arts majojrs with hands-on remote broadcast experience.
